Most retro football shirt projects fail in the same place. The buyer sends a photo of a shirt from thirty years ago, the factory reproduces the graphic accurately, and the sample comes back looking like a modern training top in fancy dress. The artwork was right. Everything underneath it was wrong.
A reissue works when the garment reads as period-correct before anyone looks at the print. That means the collar, the panel structure, the seam positions and the fabric hand are doing the work, and the graphic is only confirming what the shape already said. This is a garment engineering problem more than a graphic design problem, and it is worth understanding before you brief a factory.
The four things that actually carry the retro read
1. The collar dates the shirt faster than the crest
Ask ten people to sort a pile of unbranded shirts by era and they will sort by neckline. A wide, soft-fold polo collar with a two-button placket sits in a completely different decade from a narrow ribbed crew, and a V-insert with contrast binding sits somewhere else again. The graphic can be entirely invented and the shirt will still read as vintage if the neckline is honest.
The practical consequence: collar construction is a separate cost item from printing. Rib knit collars, woven placket collars and self-fabric bindings are different builds. Decide this at the tech pack stage, not after the first printed sample, because changing the neckline changes the pattern.
2. Colour blocking belongs at the seam, not on top of it
Modern sublimated kits often print a colour block wherever the designer drew it, which can leave a hard colour edge floating across the middle of a panel. Older shirts almost never did that, because colour changes were achieved by sewing a different piece of fabric in. The eye picks this up even when the viewer cannot say why.
With full sublimation you can fake it, but only if the artwork is built onto the actual pattern pieces. In our production order the graphic and pattern are made together, then the fabric is printed flat, then panels are laser cut from the printed roll. A stripe that continues cleanly from front panel into sleeve exists only because someone aligned it across the pattern before printing. If the artwork is handed over as a flat rectangle with no pattern beneath it, the stripe will step at the seam by a few millimetres and the shirt will look cheap.
3. Stripes, hoops and sleeve trim have rules
Vertical stripes on a body panel need to be planned around the side seam and the underarm, otherwise a stripe dies halfway into the armhole. Hoops need to be checked across sizes: a hoop layout that looks balanced on M can put a band across the hem on 3XL if the artwork is simply scaled. Ask the factory whether the graphic is being re-laid per size or scaled proportionally. Re-laid is more work and it is the correct answer for hooped designs.
4. Fit and finish give away the decade
Boxier body, shorter sleeve, higher hem split, wider armhole. A slim athletic block with laser-bonded everything will never look like a reissue no matter what you print on it. Conversely, a genuinely boxy cut with clean modern seam finishing is what most brands actually want to sell today: retro silhouette, current construction quality. Premium flatlock stitching on a boxy block is a defensible combination.

Distress and fade: what sublimation does well, and what it cannot do
Sublimation ink turns to gas under heat and pressure and bonds into the polyester fibre itself, so there is no ink layer sitting on the surface. Three things follow from that physical fact, and they decide what kind of vintage effect is realistic.
First, large soft gradients, blotchy fades and photographic wear textures cost nothing extra. There are no screens and no colour count limit, so a full-body distressed wash is the same job as a plain body. This is the single biggest reason retro programmes suit sublimation rather than screen printing.
Second, the print has no hand feel. You cannot use sublimation to imitate the slightly raised, plasticky feel of an old screen-printed number, or the ridge of an embroidered crest. If that tactile quality is part of the product story, plan an applied badge or embroidery as a separate operation on top of a sublimated body.
Third, white is the fabric, not ink. Any area that needs to stay bright white must be left unprinted, which means a heavily faded off-white vintage tone is easy while a crisp white-on-dark graphic needs to be designed around this limitation. Also plan on polyester: the process bonds to polyester fibre, so cotton-heavy retro fabric handfeel is achieved through weave and weight choices, not by switching the base fibre. The licensing line you cannot cross
This is where reissue projects get expensive. Club crests, sponsor logos, competition badges and current player name sets are protected intellectual property. A factory printing them without a licence is producing counterfeit goods, and the risk lands on the importer as much as the manufacturer.
What is safe:
- Colourways, stripe layouts and general silhouettes, which are not owned in the way a logo is
- Your own crest, your own wordmark, your own numbering typeface
- Period-styled design language, described as heritage-inspired rather than as a replica of any club
- Blank retro shirts sold as a base for licensed decoration by whoever holds the rights
What is not safe: reproducing any active club or federation identity, sponsor marks, or player name sets without written permission from the rights holder. If you do hold a licence, expect the licensor to review artwork and to require documented factory compliance. Choosing fabric: retro look, modern hand
Weight controls how the shirt hangs and how the print reads. Lighter constructions drape and look contemporary; denser interlocks sit flatter, take colour more evenly and read closer to an older shirt. These are real codes from our range, with weights and compositions as tested:

If you are unsure, order the same artwork on a 150 gsm interlock and on a 170 gsm stretch body, then compare them on a hanger rather than flat on a table. The drape difference is invisible flat and obvious hanging. Weights and test data for each code sit in our fabric lab.
Sampling and quality checks worth insisting on
Full sublimation samples run in about 5 to 7 days, and quotes come back within 1 to 2 business days, so there is little reason to skip a physical sample on a retro programme where colour subtlety is the whole point. Faded tones are exactly the case where a 95% colour match target matters most, because a washed-out vintage green drifting slightly warm looks like a mistake rather than a design choice.
On the sample, check these specifically:
- Stripe and panel alignment across every seam, including the underarm
- Hoop position on the largest size in the run, not just the sample size
- Colour fastness and wash durability on the faded areas, where drift shows first
- Print adhesion and seam strength, plus anti-pilling on denser interlocks
- Shrinkage after wash, which changes the relationship between a printed hem band and the actual hem
- Zipper and trim durability if the capsule includes jackets or hooded pieces

Where retro fits in a wider range
Reissue-styled shirts rarely sell alone.
