Custom Esports Jerseys: Design Rules That Hold Up on Camera

An esports jersey is judged through a webcam at 720p, a compressed Twitch stream, and a thumbnail 300 pixels wide. Nobody sees it from the stands. That single fact changes almost every decision a buyer makes about fit, colour, sponsor placement and fabric weight, and it is why a design that was drawn for a football kit tends to look muddy and cheap the moment your roster sits down at the desk.

We build both. Here is where the two genuinely diverge on the production floor.

A seated athlete is a different pattern problem

A footballer is upright and moving. A player on stage is seated, leaning forward, elbows on the desk, shoulders rolled in, for six to ten hours during a bootcamp. That posture does three things to a garment cut on a standard athletic block:

  • The front hem rides up and the back hem drops. A straight hem looks level on a fit model standing in your sample room and looks crooked on camera the second the player sits. Esports blocks want a slightly longer back rise, or a curved hem that reads level when seated.
  • Sleeves bunch at the inner elbow. Anything cut tight through the bicep and forearm creates a horizontal crease exactly where your sponsor’s sleeve logo sits. Sleeve prints belong on the outer upper arm, not the forearm.
  • The shoulder seam migrates forward. Set-in sleeves cut for an arms-down standing pose pull the shoulder panel toward the chest once the arms come onto a desk. A hard colour break at that seam will look asymmetrical on stream.

The wear points move too. On a football kit the abrasion is at the hip and underarm. On a gaming jersey it is the forearm and elbow against the desk edge, the shoulder blades against a mesh chair back, and the cuff hem that gets pushed up and down all day. That is where premium flatlock stitching earns its cost — a flatlock seam sits flush against the desk instead of standing proud and abrading. It is also why we avoid heavy overlock ridges on the inner sleeve here.

What a compressed stream does to your artwork

Video compression allocates bits to motion and detail. A jersey sitting mostly still in the frame gets starved. Three things break first:

Saturated pure red and pure magenta bleed. Chroma subsampling stores colour at lower resolution than brightness, so a hot red logo on a dark navy body smears at the edges before anything else in the frame does. Pull the saturation back a step and let the shape carry the brand.

Thin outlines vanish. A 1mm keyline around a wordmark survives on a physical garment and disappears entirely at streaming bitrates. If a logo needs an outline to separate it from the background, the background is wrong.

Gradients band — unless the printing method is right. This is where sublimation genuinely wins rather than just being cheaper. In full sublimation the ink is turned to gas under heat and bonds into the polyester fibre itself, so a gradient is a continuous tone dyed into the cloth, with no ink layer sitting on top. There is no screen count to pay for, no halftone dot stack, no plastisol edge catching the stage lights. A 12-stop gradient costs the same as a flat colour. Compare that with screen print, where every additional colour is another screen, another registration risk, and another opaque layer that cracks at the elbow crease.

The same physics is what lets small elements hold. Because there is no minimum dot size imposed by a mesh screen, small sponsor wordmarks, player tags and gamertags print cleanly. Where sublimation is the wrong answer

If the org wants a jersey on cotton, or wants a raised puff or embroidered crest as the hero element, sublimation is not it. Dye sublimation bonds to polyester; on a cotton-rich blend the colour washes out pale and inconsistent. Teams that want a heavyweight cotton-hand streetwear piece should be looking at a different construction entirely — that is a retro streetwear conversation, not a jersey one.

Fabric weight: what actually holds up on camera

Weight is the decision buyers get wrong most often. Lighter is not automatically better — thin polyester goes semi-transparent under a stage key light and shows every wrinkle from the chair back. Heavier is not automatically premium either, because a stiff fabric will not drape over a seated torso and reads boxy in frame.

The short version: for a jersey that will be on camera under lights for hours, 150–170 gsm with a little spandex is the sweet spot. The spandex is not for athletic movement — it is so the fabric follows a rounded seated back instead of tenting off it. Sponsor placement for a chest-up frame

Broadcast cameras and player webcams both frame roughly from the sternum up. Everything below that line is invisible for most of the broadcast, so a sponsor paying for the front hem is paying for nothing — and will notice by the second event.

Priority order for a seated frame, highest visibility first: upper chest and collar band, outer upper sleeve, shoulder yoke (the over-the-shoulder desk shot), then upper back for the walk-on and rear stage camera. Give the lower front a small maker mark or nothing.

One more placement rule people forget: headsets. An over-ear headset with a boom mic cuts into the shoulder and upper chest on one side. Check which side your team’s headset arm falls on before you commit a sponsor to a specific shoulder.

How the garment is actually made, and what to inspect at each stage

Our sequence runs: digital graphic and pattern design, high-fidelity sublimation printing, precision laser cutting, expert tailoring and assembly, professional ironing and finishing, then eco-friendly packaging, retail ready. The order matters because the print happens on flat panels before cutting. That is what makes edge-to-edge and seam-crossing artwork possible — and it also means a colour error caught after printing costs you a reprinted panel, not a patched garment. Approve colour before print.

Laser cutting decides whether your design lines up across a seam. Hand-cut panels drift by a few millimeters, and a stripe crossing the side seam shows the offset.

On testing, fabric goes through colour fastness, anti-pilling, shrinkage, seam strength, print adhesion, zipper and trim durability, and wash durability, with third-party Intertek reports available. Finished goods are inspected to an AQL 2.5 standard. For an esports buyer the two tests worth asking about by name are wash durability and print adhesion — a bootcamp jersey gets washed far more often than a match kit worn twenty times a season. Getting from a Discord logo file to a sample

Most orgs come to us with a vector logo, a hex code and a rough idea. That is enough to start. We return a quotation in one to two business days, and a full-sublimation sample garment in five to seven days once artwork is locked. Low minimums mean a new org can order a real roster kit without warehousing stock, and the same artwork scales into hoodies and tees as the team grows.
